Paradox games (Stellaris as part of that) are some of the only games that let the player make grand strategic choices about whether to go to war or not, how to build their economy, and so on. And the strategic layer is turn based, only the battles are real time, when literally nothing else is happening. There are loads of games that tackle tactical level combat between opposing forces, it's actually the default for the strategy game genre to be operating at the tactical level, with little to no focus on the operational or strategic level, much less the grand strategic level.Įven in Total War games, the focus is much more on the tactical than the strategic. These would all take significantly different strategies to implement and to defeat, opening new potential ways to play the game. What if you could build a fleet that automatically stayed out of a star base's range and picked off any civilian infrastructure within reach? Or one that automatically retreated from engagement with any larger force? Or a heavily armored transport fleet that ignores attackers and goes straight for landing troops on planets? Or a carrier fleet that engages from the opposite side of the solar system? Since every fleet acts like a capital ship warfleet, even if it were really possible to build something else there'd be little point to it.īut if you could build a fleet that followed different rules, you might have the chance to build a fleet around a different strategy. I think part of what does hold strategy in this game back is that every fleet no matter what always engages enemy fleets and battle stations. Plus, this idea could allow for more interesting strategies. That way I get some control over how my fleets behave and I could build a strategy around that, but wouldn't have to get into the weeds of actually stopping to fight things out. It would follow some default rules based on that setting, and then I could build my fleets and strategy accordingly. Is this an artillery fleet? A carrier fleet? A fast-attack fleet? A raider fleet? Etc.

I think if it were up to me, I'd have each fleet get a setting based on how you want it to behave. I would personally like a slightly stripped down version of idea.

This wouldn't really be for me, but I would like more ability to set strategy. I would rather have 'fleets' of a dozen custom built ships where each ship is vital, than swarms of ships that crash like locusts. Though, at that point, I would much prefer turn based tactical combat to the cluster-cluck of real-time chaos that happens in TW games. Hopefully Stellaris 2 will have better combat when it comes out in 4-6 years.

It seems unlikely to the point of pie-in-the-sky, and personally, I'd much rather see that level of work go into other areas of the game. The kind of combat you're proposing would require so much work. UI fixes, AI fixes, sector fixes, automation that works). but, there are so many other things this game desperately needs (e.g. When I play TW games, after a few dozen hours of managing combat, I inevitably start auto-resolving my combats, because I don't have 8hrs a day to play, and I want to get on with the larger strategy. I used to want something like this, but I actually like that Stellaris combat is essentially 'auto-resolve' combats from Total War.
